Lend Him a Helping Hand During Prostate Cancer Treatment

One of the most crucial prostate caner stages where family support is very much required is when the patient makes a decision as to what form of prostate caner treatment he shall take. The choice of treatment is somewhat stressful for the patient bearing in mind that these treatments are mostly invasive and may have some enduring side effects. If the patient is relatively young and is sexually active, making a choice is particularly difficult. Most of the effective prostate cancer treatments have the potential of causing impotence and sterility. Remember that with prostate cancer, the cancer cells are in the prostate located beneath the urethra and opposite the rectum. In order to keep the sperm healthy and fertile, part of the normal functions of the prostate is to produce seminal fluids. The reproductive functions of the patient will be affected by a faulty prostate.

Truths About Prostate Cancer

One of the harsh truths about prostate cancer is that these cancer cells feed on the male hormones themselves. Thus, prostate cancer treatments could be directed at holding back the male hormones. For a lot of men, being impotent or sterile is not even satisfactory. Men often fight those kinds of treatments although they are often very effective for fear of losing their masculinity. Note that suppression of the male hormones could have some horrible side effects such as growth of breast tissues, breast tenderness, hot flashes, impotency, and loss of sexual drive among others. For most men, it is very difficult to accept these side effects. One of the most difficult to handle under these circumstances is men who are happily married and are relatively young.

Support of Spouse for Prostate Cancer Treatment

Although wives may also find these prostate caner side effects unpleasant, they should struggle not to let their husbands know how much these have affected them. Wives should keep in mind that they married the man and not his reproductive organ; this message should be always communicated by the wife to the husband all the way through the treatment and after that. It may be hard at first but sooner or later, the husband would begin to realize that even though they may not enjoy the same sex life as beforehand, they are still other ways to take pleasure in each other’s company as husband and wife. Holding his hand literally and figuratively through the treatment process would greatly reduce the burden off from the sufferer.

Prostate Cancer Support Groups

Unfortunately, where all the attention are now focused on the patient and his sufferings, the wife is often left to fend for herself and manage her own pain on top of providing strength to her husband. At times, this may prove to be too much for the wife. Fortunately, there are a lots of prostate cancer support groups for people with prostate cancer in addition to a network composed of wives whose husbands have prostate cancer. Most hospitals in the United States have a list of support groups whose members are available whenever you feel like talking and sharing your experiences. These people have gone through or are going through the same situation as you are so you can with no difficulty communicates and find some strength. It would really help a lot to talk to this support group and unburden yourself infrequently.
