Prostate Cancer and Obesity

Obesity is one of the most dangerous of problems confronting America today. A recent study showed that an incredible 65% of American adults are either overweight or obese – a ridiculously staggering amount that is unequaled in the entire world. The same study reported that 31% of all American children are classified as overweight or obese. As Americans consume more food, it seems as though they are exercising less and less. An estimated 40% of adults and teenagers do not exercise on a regular basis. With increasing rates of food consumption and decreasing rates of physical activity comes higher rates of illness. With the health of the average American deteriorating, the nation has been beset with a host of diseases like diabetes, heart failure, and yes, prostate cancer.

Connection between Obesity and Prostate Cancer

While the exact connection between obesity and prostate cancer is not fully documented, there is no doubt that obesity has a negative effect on the outcome of many diseases. Some studies have shown that obesity makes prostate cancer harder to detect, as it skewers the results of tests such as the PSA (also known as the prostate-specific antigen test). This can potentially lead to a delay in the prostate cancer diagnosis, which in turn may even cause death that requires treatment that is more difficult.

Prostate Cancer and Obesity : Weight Management

All prostate cancer patients should incorporate weight management as a part of their overall strategy. Weight management, an active lifestyle, and a balanced diet are all interrelated anyway. If you are reasonably active and eat a variety of foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, you are less probable to become sick. Whether we are talking about the common cold or cancer, individuals who exercise more and eat the right foods are at a decided advantage.

Prostate Cancer and Obesity : Diet Management

The first component of obesity control is diet management. You must not simply eat anything that is put opposite you. You have a goal, so you must have a plan. Most people don’t give a second’s thought to the nutrients that they receive from their food. Don’t make that same mistake. You should be knowledgeable on food. You don’t necessarily have to be an expert, but you must as a minimum know the basics. These days, it is relatively easy to gain information about food. You will not have a difficult time finding the resources that you need, if you have access to the internet or a bookstore.

Prostate Cancer and Obesity: Exercise

Exercise is the second component of weight management. It is very significant that you exercise on a habitual basis. Most experts suggest that you get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, at least three times a week. Of course, you should try to go further than this bear minimum.

Stretching exercises, such as those done in yoga or Pilates, keep the body flexible and limber.

Cardiovascular exercises like jogging, walking, and cycling will help you keep your heart healthy. They will also burn lots of calories. To increase your muscles and make stronger your body, consider resistance training.

Sports for Obesity and Prostate Cancer

If you have difficulty exercising on a constant basis, try taking up a sport that you are interested in. As long as you have fun doing something, you will probably do it repeatedly. Basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis, badminton, and even golf are good sports to engage in. As long as it can get you off the couch, it’s a good start to combating obesity, and therefore combating prostate cancer.
